Van Beinum, Part 4. Decca 78s

Continuing with my series of recordings conducted by Eduard van Beinum, here are a number of Decca 78 rpm recordings that I have transfered. There have been sporadic reissues of a few of these, but they are certainly not among the more widely known items in his discography. Over the years, I’ve tried to get sound from these records to live up to Decca’s “FFRR” moniker, but only recently, thanks to the collection and fine playback equipment of friend and fellow collector Mike Gartz, have I finally been able to get results that I’m satisfied with. I was certainly surprised at the modern sound of these records, after much hum and snap, crackle and pop were tamed a bit. The Malcolm Arnold overture was a hi-fi demonstration record in its day, and it’s clear to hear why: it’s a vivid, brilliant, and impactful recording still!

The performances speak for themselves, and strike a medium ground between character, fidelity to the score, and beauty of orchestral execution, sound and phrasing.
